800 million UPI payments a day, and nobody even noticed
September was the first month UPI averaged more than 800 million payments a day. A few thoughts on why it worked, from people who build apps for a living.

Try paying for a cutting chai with a ₹500 note these days and watch the face you get. Most small shops would rather you just scan the sticker.
That habit now has a number attached to it. NPCI's figures for September, as reported last week, show 24.07 billion UPI transactions in the month, worth ₹29.37 lakh crore. Spread over 30 days, that's roughly 802 million payments every day. It's the first time the daily average has gone past 800 million, and the average amount moving each day, about ₹97,900 crore, was also a record.
(If you saw a headline saying UPI "dipped" in September, that's only because August had one more day in it. Per day, it grew.)
We spend a lot of time thinking about why some apps stick and others don't, and UPI is a strange case. Nobody downloads "UPI". You use whatever app your bank or your phone pushed you towards, and it all works with everything else. The shop doesn't need a card machine. It needs a printed QR code and a bank account. That one decision, keeping the cost for small sellers at almost zero, probably did more than any advertising campaign ever could.
The part we find most interesting isn't the big number, though. It's the trail it leaves. Every ₹20 payment at a kirana store is a small record that the business exists and earns money. Lenders have started to use that history. For a shopkeeper who has never had a payslip or a credit card, two years of steady UPI receipts can be the first real proof they've ever had that they're good for a loan.
Step back and it's remarkable. A system that lets a tea seller and a large company use exactly the same rails, for free, is now handling more payments in a day than many countries handle in a month. Most of the people using it don't think about it at all, which is about the best thing you can say about any piece of technology.
