How it works
Adding GST: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100, and the total is the amount plus GST. For ₹10,000 at 18%, GST is ₹1,800 and the total is ₹11,800.
Removing GST: amount before GST = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). For a total of ₹11,800 at 18%, the amount before GST is ₹10,000 and GST is ₹1,800.
CGST, SGST and IGST: when you sell within your own state, the GST is split equally between CGST (central) and SGST (state). For 18%, that is 9% + 9%. When you sell to another state, the whole amount is IGST.
Which rate should I use?
Since the GST reform of September 2025, most goods and services fall into two main slabs: 5% for everyday items and 18% as the standard rate. A 40% rate applies to luxury and sin goods. Gold and silver use a special 3% rate and rough diamonds 0.25%. Some essentials are nil-rated at 0%.
Rates depend on the exact product or service, so always check the rate for your HSN or SAC code on the official GST portal, or with your accountant. This calculator is a quick helper, not tax advice.
