There are thousands of AI tools now, and most of them are aimed at big companies with big budgets. If you run a shop, a clinic, a coaching centre or a small service business, here are six free ones that will actually save you time this week.
All of them have free versions. Some have paid upgrades, but you can get real value without paying anything.
1. ChatGPT or Gemini: your writing assistant
Both have free versions that are very good at everyday business writing:
- Product descriptions for your catalogue
- Polite replies to tricky customer messages
- A festival offer post for Instagram or WhatsApp status
- Translating a message into Hindi, Tamil, Bengali or another language
The trick is to give it context. Not "write a sofa description", but "write a short, friendly description for a 3-seater sofa in grey fabric, solid wood frame, for a small furniture shop. Mention it's comfortable for families. Under 60 words."
Always read before you send. AI can confidently get facts wrong, like prices or delivery times. You're the one your customer trusts.
2. WhatsApp Business: now with AI help
If you're still using normal WhatsApp for your business, switch to the free WhatsApp Business app. You get a business profile, a catalogue, quick replies and away messages.
In May, WhatsApp announced a Business AI assistant for small businesses in India. It can answer common customer questions around the clock, in Indian languages, using your own catalogue, prices and documents, and you can take over any conversation at any time. It's rolling out to eligible businesses, so check the Tools tab in your app.
3. Canva: designs without a designer
Canva's free plan lets you make posters, social posts, menus and visiting cards from ready-made templates, and it includes some AI features with monthly limits, such as writing help and AI image generation. For a shop that needs one good-looking offer post a week, it's often all you need.
4. Google Business Profile: be found on Google Maps
Not an "AI tool" in the flashy sense, but it matters more than ever. When someone searches "furniture shop near me", Google's results and AI answers lean heavily on Business Profiles. It's free. Add real photos, correct timings, your phone number, and reply to every review, good or bad.
5. Google Lens and Translate: quick fixes
Point Google Lens at a printed bill, a supplier's price list or a product label and you can copy the text instead of typing it out. Google Translate's camera mode helps with labels and documents in other languages. Small things, but they add up.
6. Free AI pictures for your posts
For festival greetings, blog covers or social media backgrounds, an AI picture can look better than a stock photo. You can try ours for free, with no sign-up: the AI picture maker. There's a beginner's guide with prompts too.
Just don't use AI pictures in place of real photos of your products. Customers want to see what they'll actually get.
What AI can't do for you
AI can write, translate, design and answer the same question for the hundredth time without getting tired. What it can't do is be the person your customers trust. The shop owner who remembers a regular's name, who calls back when they promised, who sorts out a problem fairly: that's still the most powerful "tool" a small business has.
Use AI for the repetitive work, and spend the time it saves on the people.
